Hubbell & Hubbell often utilizes multiple green technologies in one home. In this case at the Smoketree Ranch, the passive solar energy system creates hot water for the pool, passive solar design and clerestory windows facilitate natural cooling, and additionally, it is also a straw bale structure.
Straw bale construction has several benefits, but some of the most important include its low-embodied energy, which is the energy used to produce a product. The bales typically come from leftover stalks from California rice crops and are an annually renewable bi-product.
These thick straw bale walls, airtight and covered in plaster on the exterior and interior, have incredibly high thermal performance. Compared to typical insulation in conventional building materials, which have an insulation rating of R-12 to R-15, these plastered straw bale walls have 3 times the rating at R-40 to R-50! These energy savings for space cooling and heating, especially in San Diego County’s desert regions, where it is very hot in the summer and can reach cold temperatures in the winter, continue to accrue for the life span of the structure.
Here at Hubbell & Hubbell, we believe in integrating sustainability with artistry, innovation, and tradition, both for the benefit of the client and the health of the planet. Contact us if you are interested in building your dream home.
