Art and architecture can transform spaces and connect people, art, and nature. Few people understand and execute this concept as well as the artist James Hubbell (b. 1931). He brings together people with various backgrounds and skillsets, encouraging friendship and collaboration. Their efforts culminate in art and buildings which are a testament to creativity, teamwork, and James’s belief in the power of art.

The exhibition, Lado a Lado, highlights Hubbell & the Ilan Lael Foundation’s work on buildings and art in Mexico, the result of over 30 years of projects. Lado a Lado translates to “side by side,” a phrase which epitomizes James’s view of the people and places he has touched. Baja California and California share a border, side by side. As well as geographic proximity, “side by side” also refers to bonds between people. The people who have put aside differences and focused on similarities, to work together on the buildings and art, side by side.

The exhibit features Hubbell buildings, including: Colegio La Esperanza schools (Tijuana), Pacific Rim Park (La Playa), the Kumeyaay Museum (Tecate), and Kuchumaa Passage at Rancho La Puerta (Tecate). The show features photography, video, maquettes, plans, drawings, watercolors, sculpture, and art objects. The show gives insight into James Hubbell’s creative process, artistic talent, and his ability to bring people together.

The exhibition is free and open to the public on weekdays, 9am to 5pm, at the Instituto Municipal de Arte y Cultura de Tijuana.  It is open now through September 24.
