We are celebrating Earth Day today by sharing a glimpse into a recently completed project. Nestled among the manzanita trees and California oaks of northern Escondido, this residence was designed to honor the natural contours of the land and the indigenous cultures of the region.
The home itself is a quiet presence on its site, blending with the existing boulders and native plants. As you approach, natural flagstone steps guide you through the landscape. Two large boulders become part of the home’s exterior, creating a sense of the building being held by the earth. Inside, this connection continues, with another boulder shaping the flow of the space. Large windows and sliding doors frame expansive views.
Throughout the home, sustainable choices are woven into the design. Healthy alternatives to traditional finishes, such as lime-washed plaster and stained concrete, create a natural and grounding atmosphere. The walls and roof are constructed from innovative, resilient materials offering high insulation and durability. Passive design strategies, like strategic window placement for daylighting and shading to prevent overheating, contribute to the home’s energy efficiency. With solar panels and a battery system, this residence is designed to be a net-zero energy home, demonstrating a commitment to a lighter footprint on the planet.
These photos offer a sneak peek into this special project. We look forward to sharing more once our professional photography is complete.
