The Modernist

Located near Lake Hodges in Escondido, this residence was designed as a thoughtful response to both loss and renewal, replacing a home destroyed by wildfire with a distinctly modern interpretation of residential living. The owners, originally from Europe, brought with them an appreciation for clean architectural lines, simplicity, and a strong connection between form and function. Their vision called for a home that felt contemporary and refined while remaining practical, durable, and easy to maintain.

The design embraces a restrained modern aesthetic, characterized by clean forms, carefully considered proportions, and an understated material palette. Rather than relying on elaborate detailing, the architecture allows the quality of the spaces, natural light, and relationship to the surrounding landscape to take center stage. Low-maintenance materials and thoughtfully integrated building systems were selected to create a home that is both beautiful and resilient, while an emphasis on energy efficiency helps reduce long-term resource consumption and operating costs.
