Are you going to be passing through Tecate, Mexico this summer? If you are, carve out some time to visit the Kumiai Museum. Tecate is at the center of the ancient territory of the Kumiai (Kumeyaay in English) people, who today live both north and south of the international border.
Learn about the original peoples of the region from the living descendants of our local indigenous groups. Designed by James and Drew Hubbell, the multilingual museum offers educational programs, cultural revitalization activities, and informative exhibits.
Boulders harvested locally as well as brick sourced from Tecate brick-makers make up the sloped walls and domed roof. Resin clerestory window panels with colorful specks of glass and stone bring light into the space. Check it out for yourself if you’re in the area!
