Thanks to Chava Gourarie at Mansion Global, who wrote an article highlighting the Boulder House in Jamul. The 3-bedroom straw bale residence, which we featured in our most recent post, is now on the market! One of the highlights of the Hubbell & Hubbell home is the 14-foot boulder around which the home is designed.

Ahead of its time regarding sustainability, the residence utilizes both the thermal mass of the boulder and the insulating qualities of 2-foot-thick straw bale walls to keep a stable interior temperature despite the hot summer months of eastern San Diego County. The boulder pulls from the earth’s temperature, which is about 62 degrees Fahrenheit, so the boulder doesn’t get much warmer than 65 degrees, therefore keeping the home cooler. Drew states, “Above the boulder, we built a cooling tower. In the summer time, you open the windows and it helps all the hot air escape. On colder days, there’s a large fan above it, so we close the windows and circular the air down.”

We’re excited to see Carol McGuinness’s beautiful photos of the home, and if you’d like to check out the listing, The Savory Group has it listed here.
