Why are renovations and reusing existing structures important to sustainability?
Renovations offer a sustainable approach by using what already exists and improving it. There are many sustainable benefits.
- REDUCED EMBODIED CARBON: Embodied carbon are the emissions associated with creating building materials, transporting them to the site, and assembling them. Renovating an existing structure means significantly reducing the environmental footprint when compared to constructing an entirely new building.
- DIVERTS LANDFILL WASTE: By reusing existing elements, it limits the need for new materials and reduces the amount of construction waste that ends up in landfills.
- IMPROVED BUILDING PERFORMANCE: Renovations can improve the performance of existing buildings. Many renovations focus on upgrading a building to be more efficient. This can involve installing better insulation, high performance windows, water-saving fixtures, and renewable or electric systems like solar panels and induction cooktops.
- HISTORIC PRESERVATION: Sometimes renovation (instead of demolition) is required because of a building has historical significance. Renovating historical buildings is sustainable and essential to preserving architectural history.
