What is solar energy?
Solar energy is energy generated by the sun and converted into thermal or electric energy. When we discuss solar energy, we are typically referring to the use of solar panels. The light and heat from the sun is collected by solar panels and used to generate electricity.
What are the benefits of solar energy?
- COST SAVINGS: In general natural gas is less expensive than electricity. However, the sun is a free renewable resource and if you can reduce or completely remove your reliance on the electric grid, the cost savings are very large.
- RENEWABLE: Using solar energy reduces the negative impact on the environment as solar is 100% renewable. It does not produce any carbon emissions or heat-trapping greenhouse gases.
- SAFETY DURING A POWER OUTAGE: If you have solar panels, you still have access to electricity during a power outage. In addition, solar panel battery storage is a great way to ensure that you have electricity throughout the night and during days with little sun.
Are buildings in California required to have solar panels?
Yes, California is the only state requiring solar systems on new construction projects. The California Solar Mandate went into effect on January 1, 2020, and is part of California’s Building Code. It requires all new residential construction projects to have solar photovoltaic (PV) systems installed. This includes single-family homes, condominiums and apartment buildings less than three stories high.
