HACIENDA COURTYARD RESIDENCE

Situated along the banks of a canal in the desert landscape of Yuma, Arizona, this Mexican Hacienda–inspired residence was designed around the owners’ desire for a home that was both deeply rooted in its regional character and thoughtfully responsive to its environment. Seeking out Hubbell & Hubbell for expertise in green building design, the owners made sustainability a guiding principle of the project from its earliest conception.

The architecture employs passive strategies to create comfort in Yuma’s demanding desert climate. A covered arcade along the south façade provides shade from the intense summer sun, while the traditional three-sided courtyard organizes the home around a central swimming pool. Together, the shaded arcade, courtyard, and pool create opportunities for passive cooling and natural air movement, reducing the home’s reliance on mechanical systems.

The home’s walls are constructed with locally manufactured insulated concrete form (ICCF) blocks, creating a highly insulated envelope with exceptional resistance to fire, mold, and termites. The owners also brought a remarkable collection of salvaged timbers to the project, reclaimed from a Mexican railroad bridge. These massive timbers were thoughtfully incorporated throughout the residence, including as structural elements and framing for clerestory windows. Positioned high within the walls, the clerestories draw daylight deep into the interiors while promoting natural ventilation.

Inside, Mexican glazed tile and richly colored plaster walls bring warmth, texture, and a distinctly festive character to the spaces. The resulting home marries the timeless traditions of Mexican Hacienda architecture with passive environmental strategies and resilient materials, creating a residence that is both culturally expressive and uniquely suited to its desert setting.
