The many artful and sculptural elements of the Welborn Studio render this art studio a perfect haven for creativity. James Hubbell incorporated numerous artistic elements into the design, including a carved wood and stained glass entry door, wrought iron & glass light sconces, and mosaic tile inlays. High clerestory windows create the perfect lighting effects for painting while facilitating natural ventilation.
The studio’s presence, while being artful, is also sensitive to its natural surroundings, carefully blending into the landscape. The studio rests at a level lower than the neighboring residence, allowing the residents to look down on the living roof of the art studio, which is clad in native plants. This living roof camouflages the art studio from above while simultaneously offering insulation-–one of the studio’s integrated green building features.
